Forums to discuss alcohol abuse will be held at Stephen F. Austin State University on Monday, Oct. 15. The forums are being held in response to the death of Nikolas Gallegos, a freshman at the university, on Oct. 7 following an off-campus event involving alcohol.
“Our campus community has been saddened by the passing of one of our students as a result of excessive alcohol consumption,” said Michael Preston, SFA director of student life. “His family and friends have received tremendous support, but many students still may have questions about the incident and how they can protect themselves and their friends from an incident like this.”
The forums will be held at noon and 7 p.m. in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Twilight Ballroom and will feature a panel of university staff members who will discuss various aspects related to this incident. The panel will include Preston, along with Sheri Mullican, counseling center; Beverly Farmer, student activities; Dr. John Miller, health services; Dr. Peggy Scott, Student Judicial Office; and Chris Rivers, University Police Department.
Representatives will present information on the prevention of alcohol-related accidents, symptoms of and response to alcohol poisoning, the adjudication of alcohol violations on campus, the role of alcohol education, and taking a proactive approach to alcohol use. Students’ questions will be answered in a non-judgmental, open forum to address concerns and dispel rumors or misinformation, Preston said.
This event is open to the entire campus community, but students are especially encouraged to attend. The same information will be presented by SFA representatives in each session, and sessions will last about one hour or until all questions are answered.
