In the first three events of the 2006 season, the Stephen F. Austin State University debate team has earned three overall sweepstakes awards. SFA and Ouachita Baptist University co-hosted the first tournament of the year on SFA's campus on Sept. 29 through Oct. 1. The tournament marked the first time two International Public Debate Association tournaments were held back-to-back on the same campus in one weekend.
Dan Eldridge, San Antonio senior, received a varsity champion award, and Billy Wiggins, Beaumont sophomore, finished in second place. The SFA Debate Team won the first place overall sweepstakes award.
The debate team traveled to the University of Arkansas in Monticello on Oct. 13 and won the first place overall sweepstakes award. In the open division, Pat Richey, Kansas City, Mo, graduate student, was a quarterfinalist. Chris Duerringer, Kingwood graduate student, was named open champion, and in the varsity division, Wiggins was a semifinalist.
John Nichols, Henderson sophomore, and Eldridge competed in the varsity final round. Nichols was named varsity champion, and Eldridge finished in second place. Again, SFA won the first place overall sweepstakes award.
The team's most recent tournament was the Louisiana Tech "Hot and Spicy" Tournament Oct. 27. Duerringer won first place in open division, and SFA won the first place overall sweepstakes award
